About the Library

Established with the official inauguration of the university in October 2004. The library is designed to accommodate in its initial stage around 100,000 library items to serve the University community. Plans are underway to build a five- storey- library in the near future.

The University of Nizwa main library aims to build a balanced library and information resources in support of teaching and research activities within the university and to serve the information needs of the community at large. The library is committed to provide quality information to all its users by making its resources available for use and to encourage the use of information and related technologies to enhance the electronic environment in the university.

The library is located at the centre of the university campus and within reach from classrooms and faculty offices.

The VIRTUA library system and its integration with RFID library security system has been installed and used in the library. The system is fully arabized, web-based, integrated solution that addresses all the information needs of the university community. The system allows connection to external data bases and reputable libraries around the globe. The system uses also the Z39.5 standard which allows connection with other databases such as the library of Congress. The RFID ( Radio Frequency Identification) is another salient feature in the library. This application allows patrons to self borrow library materials and helps also in library management. All these will-undoubtedly broaden the library resources beyond the boundaries and open endless resources that make the search for information easier and more exciting. On the other hand it gives the library management the ability to use statistics for resources counting that is difficult in traditional library services. One of the intelligent components of the library system is the self –checkout station which allows patrons (Students, Faculty or Staff ) to borrow and return library materials without any intervention from library staff.
